Join the Latrobe Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians for a tour of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) building. Marking the building’s centennial anniversary, members of the Latrobe Chapter will lead a tour with the Cultural Affairs staff from NAS through the stunning 1924 collaboration of architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, mosaicist Hildreth Meiere, sculptor Lee Lawrie, and muralist Albert Herter. The building’s “Alexandrian” design fused Greek, Byzantine, Egyptian, and Art Deco elements exhibiting Goodhue’s novel ability to synthesize historical and contemporary styles. Decorative arts are masterfully incorporated into the building’s design and serve to emphasize its role as the “nation’s home of science in America.” Later additions expanded the building, including the 1970 wing which holds the Cyril Harris-designed Fred Kavli Auditorium, which will also be included on the tour.
Tickets are available to the public from the National Academy of Sciences via Eventbrite. Space will be limited for this free program. All attendees must bring a form of identification for admittance to the building. See link below to register.
